A set of 86 common wheat, 16 durum wheat and eight triticale cultivars was tested at Njoro, Kenya against Ug99 stem rust races. A set of 182 genotypes (breeding donors developed at PBI) carrying more than one resistance gene to stripe rust, leaf rust and stem rust was also screened. Ug99 stem rust resistant versions of different donor sources were identified.

Disease resistance(s)
Wheat stem rust, Wheat stripe rust
Additional Information
Disease severities of 40-60% were observed on 14 cultivars. Cultivars Sunmaster and Tungsten showed 70% stem rust severity and 80% severity was noted on EG Titanium and RGT Zanzibar. LRPB Oryx had the highest stem severity (90%). Cultivars LRPB Lancer, LRPB Cobra, LRPB Stealth, LRPB Trojan and Sunmax were highly resistant with less than 5% stem rust severities. All durum wheat and triticale cultivars were highly resistant with 0-5% stem rust severities. The nursery had also good stripe rust development. Forty-eight, 10 and 15 cultivars showed 0- 10%, 15-20% and 30% stripe rust severities, whereas 40%, 50%, 60% and 70% severities were noted on 5, 4, 2 and 1 cultivars, respectively. Thirteen durum wheats showed 0-20% severities, whereas cultivar Saintly was scored 40MS. All triticale cultivars were highly resistant.
