A set of 82 cultivars including 67 common wheats, 8 durum wheats and 7 triticales was tested against Ug99 lineage of the stem rust pathogen and stripe rust at Njoro, Kenya.
Key Information
Crop
Wheat
Disease resistance(s)
Wheat stem rust, Wheat stripe rust
Additional Information
"Thirty-six common wheat cultivars developed 30% or less stem rust severities. Three cultivars were ranked R, 18 R-MR, 5 MR, 10 MR-MS, 9 MS, 5 MS-S and 8 S. Stem rust resistance genes Sr15 and Sr36 appeared to be effective in Kenya.
Majority of the cvs carrying Sr30 showed R-MR to MR-MS responses indicating the effectiveness of this genes in combinations with some background adult plant resistance genes. Eight cultivars remained unassessed due to late maturity. Seven triticale and six durum wheat cultivars were highly resistant to stem rust, whereas one cultivar each of triticale (Astute) and durum wheat (Bitali) developed 40% stem rust severity.
For stripe rust thirty-eight common wheat cultivars were resistant and 14 were rated MR, 5 MR-MS, 6 MS and 2 each were MS-S and S. All durum wheat and triticale cultivars exhibited highly resistant responses."
